Yelkouan Shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan)

This is a medium to large shearwater, around 30 to 38 cm long, with a wingspan between 76 and 89 cm. It is uniformly black coloured on the dorsal side and white in the ventral side. Its head is dark down to the area below the eye. Its flight pattern is typical of shearwaters, flying at the water level in non-windy days, alternating series of fast wingbeats with rigid and straight wings, and glides with rigid and slightly bent wings.

It is mostly pelagic, breeding on rocky cliffs which provide burrows or crevices for nestbuilding.

It feeds on fish, mostly small; also cephalopods, small crustaceans, and surface floating offal.
