Cretzschmar’s Bunting (Emberiza caesia)

Like all Buntings, Cretzschmar’s Bunting is quite a solidly built, finch like bird. It is around 15 to 17 cm in length. It has a grey head with a pink throat, pink underparts and brown wings. In winter the grey head is more mottled, but that is the only difference. Females have a less grey head and are a less vivid shade of pink.

This bird prefers areas of open rocky hillside with some scrubby vegetation. It is usually found near the coast or on islands, but can also be found at barren desert edges.

Like all other finch-like birds, this bunting’s diet consists of small seeds and insects.
