Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria)


The Golden Plover has a length of 28cm and can weigh between 140-210g.Golden Plovers’ summer plumage has a golden back, with a black belly, breast and face, whereas their winter plumage is paler, and often mixed with Lapwing flocks.The Golden Plover has a rapid and powerful flight action is, with regular wingbeats.


The Golden Plover live in moorland in the summer, and later change to fields and estuaries in the winter.


The Golden Plover feed on a wide range of invertebrates, especially worms, and can also eat some vegetable matter.

Protection Status 

This species is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Interesting facts

The Golden Plover is one of two birds (the other was the Red Grouse), which was the origin for the publication of the first Guinness World Records.
