Montagu’s Harrier (Circus pygargus)

Description

The Montagu’s harrier is a slim, medium-sized, long-winged bird of prey. It is the smallest harrier, measuring around 44 cm long. It has a long tail and more pointed wings than a Hen Harrier(Circus cyaneus). The male is grey above. In flight, it shows black wingtips and a black stripe across the inner wing. The female is dark brown.

Habitat

It is essentially a lowland species, and nests mostly in broad river valleys, plains, and levels bordering lakes and the sea.

Diet

Eats mainly small mammals but will take small birds, reptiles and insects.

Protection status

This species is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
