Levant water frog (Pelophylax bedriagae)

The Levant water frog is a cousin of the aquatic frog. This species is not poisonous and its colour ranges from green to brown with dark blotches on their dorsal side. Its length is between 4.8 and 12 cm.

This frog can be found in permanent wetlands or aquatic vegetation. It is common in ponds, streams, rivers, irrigation channels, reservoirs, marshes, springs and fishponds.

It feeds on small invertebrates, insects and arachnids.

Protection status

This species is listed as “Least Concern” by IUCN Red List.

Interesting Fact

Though a prolific and invasive species, it is restricted to constant fresh water supply, so it cannot spread naturally on its own on arid Mediterranean islands.
