Common Tortoise (Testudo graeca)


It has a strongly domed and smooth carapace, a single supracaudal plate, and spurs on its thighs. The carapace ranges from a length of 25-30 cm and is a variation of browns and or greens. Males can make high-pitched cries.


Found in open woodland, meadows, fields, shrubland, and sand dunes.


Testudo graeca is mainly herbivorous but, also eats earthworms and snails.

Protection status

This species is listed as “Vulnerable” by IUCN Red List.

Interesting Fact

Many species of tortoise, including this one, cannot swim and have to stay on land.
