European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis)

Description

The carapace length grows up to 25 cm and is a black colour with a few yellow spots. Males have a convex plastron whereas females' are concave. As with many reptiles, the sex of hatchlings is influenced by the temperature.

Habitat

Static, or slow-moving waterways with dense vegetation. Sometimes it can be found in brackish waters.

Diet

Emys orbicularis is omnivorous, feeding on invertebrates, tadpoles, fish, and plant material. Juveniles are more carnivorous than adults.

Protection status

This species is listed as “Near threatened” by IUCN Red List.
