Eurasian worm snake (Typhlops vermicularis)

Description

The Eurasian worm snake is a snake that looks like a rain worm, it can only grow up to 35 cm. The species has no eyes or ears, it is pink and has a light belly. The species is totally harmless and has no venom.

Habitat

Typhlops vermicularis lives under the ground near ant colonies. The species is associated with moist, sparsely vegetated, open areas. It is often found in grassy fields and slopes and specifically under rocks and occupying burrows made by worms. Animals are generally only found during the springtime.

Diet

The Eurasian worm snake eats only ants and ant-larvae.

Protection status

This species is listed as “Least Concern” by IUCN Red List.
