Large whip snake (Dolichophis caspius)


The large whip snake is known to not be venomous and it is also considered as a form of natural pest control due to its diet. This snake is the continent’s largest species, reaching between 1.4 and 1.6 m in length. The largest recorded was 2.5 m long.


It can be found in grassy open areas with sparse shrubbery as well as on rocky riverbanks and swampy areas.


The diet of this species consists of small mammals and birds.

Protection status

This species is listed as “Least Concern” by IUCN Red List.
