Cat snake (Telescopus fallax)

Description

These are small to medium snakes, with a slender and more or less cylindrical body and a rather short tail. Its length can reach up to 1.5 m. They usually have a gold, tan, grey or light brown background colour covered with darker blotches or crossbands on the back. The head is flat, short and oval in shape. They have small to medium eyes with vertical and elliptical pupils similar to those of cats.

Habitat

This species is mostly found amongst rocks in shrubby landscapes. It can also be found in open or degraded woodland, among old walls and ruins, on sandy beaches with plant cover and sometimes close to human habitation.

Diet

The cat snake’s main source of food includes small geckos and lizards, but they also eat small mammals and even birds. Younger snakes will also eat invertebrates.

Protection status

This species is listed as “Least Concern” by IUCN Red List.
