Trees & Shrubs

Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus)

This tree reaches heights of up to 35 meters. The large leaves can reach up to 17 centimetres in width. They are dark green on the upper side and lighter green underneath. Acer pseudoplatanus is very well-known for its seeds that grow with angled wings helping them to fly through the air over very long distances in Autumn when they are mature

Sycamore can grow on virtually every type of soil, except for heavy clay, and it has a high tolerance to different pH. While the tree grows in forests with a variety of other plant species Sycamore is sometimes seen as a competitor to or a disturber of some other types of vegetation and individual plants. The Balkan area including Greece is one of the regions where it natively grows, as well of some parts of Asia. It is also found up to Germany to the North and up to Spain and Portugal to the West.

Protection status

This species is listed as “Not Evaluated” by the IUCN Red List.

Interesting facts

Acer pseudoplatanus may be threatening some smaller species, one of which is the rare and endemic Madeiran orchid (Dactylorhiza foliosa).
