Italian Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)

Description

This tree, which has a strait trunk and a pyramidal crown, may reach heights up to 40 metres. The young branchlets are almost completely covered by the numerous tiny leaves. The seed cones are originally green and then develop into brown around 20-24 months of age. Once mature, the cones, usually 3-5m long, spread pollen towards late winter.

Habitat

Cupressus sempervines naturally grows in Samos island and the NE Aegean and is also found in southern Greece, including the Peloponese and Ionian islands.

Protection status

This species is listed as “Not Evaluated” by the IUCN Red List.

Interesting facts

During classical antiquity, the Italian Cypress symbolised grief, and nowadays it’s still possible to notice how it is an important flora member in cemeteries.
