Stinking juniper (Juniperus foetidissima)

The stinking juniper is a medium-sized tree reaching up to 12m height, and showing a dense, pyramidal crown. The juvenile leaves are arranged into coils of two or three, and are rigidly needle-like; with the tree’s growth, they develop into smaller and more pointed scales. Its cones are spherical, black or greyish black, and they contain usually 1-2 seeds.

This species occurs at high altitudes, especially in the mountains or mainland Greece. It also can be found in the Peloponnese, Samos, Thassos and Lesvos, up to 2000m.
