Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum)


The Cercis siliquastrum is a deciduous tree growing up to height 12m, that has a big, spherical crown, characterised by large orbicular leaves and clusters of butterfly-shaped vibrant pink flowers. The fruits appear as long flat brown pods that can reach up to 10m long.


This species is widely spread throughout Greece and the whole of Europe in different kind of habitats. It is also planted as a street or a garden tree.

Protection status

This species is listed as “Not Evaluated” by the IUCN Red List.

Interesting facts

This tree takes his name as it is believed that Judas Iscariot hanged himself on this tree. However, the most probable real origin of its name comes from its French epithet, Arbre de Judee, which means “tree of Judea”, as it is very common in this region.
