Spanish broom (Spartium junceum)


It is a small shrub that can reach up to a maximum of 3 meters. Its branches are thick, straight and leafless. The leaves grow only during heavy rain years. Its flowers are butterfly-shaped and bright yellow that can grow up to 3cm, and they are characterise by soft sweet smell. They appear in clusters. The fruits (legumes) mature black towards late summer, and the can be 8cm long.


This tree is a constant component of Greek flora, it inhabits a wide series of habitats. It is also widely used as an ornamental plant in public streets and gardens.

This species is listed as “Not Evaluated” by the IUCN Red List.

This plant has some beneficial properties that have long been used by mankind, such as flavouring and essential oil.
