Calabrian pine (Pinus brutia)

The Calabrian pine presents some similarities with the Aleppo pine, but is taller, reaching up to 25-30 meters tall, more robust and straighter. Its leaves consist in longer pointy needles, normally 10-16cm long, and either bright green or yellowish green. The cones are short, 6-11 cm long and 5 cm wide; they are initially green, but at around two years of age they turn into glossy red-brown. The following year they open up to spread the seeds, opening between 5-8cm.

It has wide distribution range throughout the whole of Greece, including Thrace, eastern Macedonia, the northern and eastern Aegean islands, and Crete.
